A DOT physical can only be administered by an examiner who is certified through FMCSA National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners who can determine if the driver meets FMCSA's physical qualification standards. Certified Medical Examiners (CMEs) are responsible for certifying drivers who meet the physical qualification standards. A CME will evaluate the following during a DOT physical exam:
- Vital Signs
- Extremities
- Head, Eyes, Ears, Nose, and Throat
- Nervous System
- Back and Spine
- Lungs and Chest
- Heart
- Employee’s ability to manage their medical conditions
Employees are asked to bring appropriate documents or items to help the exam process go as smoothly as possible, such as eyeglasses or contacts, a list of medications, doctor’s contact information, and any information pertaining to medical conditions such as diabetes or heart conditions, etc. DOT Certifications can be issued for up to 24 months and at the discretion of the examiner and may be less dependent on the employee's medical conditions and how well they are managed. Medical Examiners will issue copies of the Medical Examiner's Report and will complete the Medical Examiner's Certificate for those individuals who are found qualified to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle.
