Expect background check delays for Nevada results

Nevada reported a widespread “network security incident” discovered on Sunday, prompting office closures, website and phone outages, and a staged recovery effort. This statewide cyber incident is disrupting access to multiple Nevada state systems. As a result, any background screening results that rely on Nevada data sources will be delayed. In-person services remain suspended at several state offices, and state leaders have since described the event as a ransomware attack.

How does this impact background screening turnaround times?

Until Nevada agencies restore normal access, background checks that require Nevada data are unable to be fulfilled. Delays may affect:

  • County and statewide criminal record searches in Nevada when courts or statewide indices are unavailable or restricted.
  • Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs) from the Nevada DMV while offices and connected services are offline.
  • Civil court record searches and other state-hosted verifications, which may include professional license lookups or state-managed registries, where those systems are impacted.

We are monitoring all Nevada data sources continuously and will resume processing the moment reliable access is confirmed.

How is DISA handling this

Active monitoring: Tracking court, DMV, and state system restorations in real time and validating access before resuming work.

  • Queue management: Holding Nevada-dependent searches in queue and prioritizing them for immediate processing once systems are confirmed stable.
  • Transparent communication: Posting updates in the platform and notifying client teams as conditions change.

What you should do now

  • Submit orders as usual. Non-Nevada components will continue to process.
  • Plan for extra time on packages that include Nevada elements.
  • Avoid final decisions based solely on partial results where Nevada components are outstanding. If you use pre-adverse or adverse action workflows, consider pausing until the Nevada portion completes. For specific policy decisions, consult your legal counsel.

Why it matters

Ransomware operations against state and local governments have increased in recent years, and restoration often occurs in phases. Nevada agencies are working through a careful recovery process, which can temporarily limit access to records that background checks require. We will keep you informed and resume normal service as soon as state systems allow.
