Reference checks help you confirm that the information about a candidate’s employment history is accurate. By verifying previous employment, you get a clearer picture of the candidate’s background and greater confidence before making a recruitment decision.

This is how we verify the candidate’s employment history:

The candidate provides contact details for referees who can confirm their previous employment history. The employer decides how many referees should be contacted and how far back in time the references should cover.

To ensure a reliable verification process, only business email addresses are accepted. Referees are never contacted via personal email addresses, such as Gmail or Hotmail, or via mobile phone numbers.

The referee receives a secure link to DISA’s platform, where employment information is verified through a digital questionnaire.

The questionnaire is used to verify employment information, such as employer, job title and employment period. The questions can be tailored to your organisation’s requirements and may be supplemented with a statement of integrity completed by the candidate.

Once the responses have been submitted, the results are compiled and included in the screening report.

The importance of verifying employment history

DISA surveyed 1,500 people in the Netherlands to better understand how information is presented in CVs. The results show that inaccuracies and exaggerations are more common than many employers realise:

  • Employment history (36%)
    Previous roles, responsibilities or work experience may be exaggerated or inaccurately represented.
  • Skills and qualifications (33 %)
    Technical skills, certifications and language abilities are often presented as more extensive than they actually are.
  • Length of previous employment (21 %) 
    Employment periods may be adjusted to conceal short-term positions or gaps in employment.
  • Previous employers (12 %)
    Information about previous employers may be inaccurate or misleading.

Checks are carried out directly with a current employee or the HR department

If the nominated referee is no longer employed by the organisation, the candidate will be asked to provide contact details for the company’s HR department or another authorised representative to verify the employment.
