Is a gang criminal teaching at your child’s school?

Calendar Icon 08 April, 2024

Is a gang criminal teaching at your child’s school? This question surely raises questions for many worried parents. According to Dagens Nyheter, it has emerged that a school in Sweden has hired a former gang criminal, as only certain offences are checked when hiring teachers.

In this blog article, we will have a closer look at how background checks can best be implemented before hiring a teacher. And how it can help you identify risks and prevent inappropriate personnel with links to gangs and criminal organisations from infiltrating schools and other vital agencies.

Hiring teachers: sometimes a criminal record check from the Police agency is not enough

Teachers have a great responsibility to teach their students and be a good role model for them. As parents, you should be able to rely on the good care of teachers and their ability to teach students at the right level. This is why it is so important that teachers are competent and, above all, suitable to look after children and minors.

Mandatory criminal record checks for the recruitment of teachers

Before recruitment and employment of teachers, or other jobs involving children and young people, requires a criminal record check from the police. The requirement for a criminal record check is laid down in the Swedish Education Act or the Act on criminal register checks on persons working with children. The checks include previous convictions involving drugs, crimes and violence against children, sexual abuse or molestation, murder or child pornography offences. The aim is to prevent the risk of child abuse. As stated earlier, sometimes a check of the criminal record is not enough. As it turned out in the DN news article, a thorough background check of the teacher candidate might help to reveal the candidate’s previous relationship with criminal organisations.
