What is included in an international background check?

International background checks are used to verify information when recruiting and hiring across borders, as well as for companies operating in multiple countries. They may include checks of CV information, education, employment history, financial records and criminal records.

Some of the most common checks include:

A criminal records check involves reviewing whether an individual is registered for criminal offences or convictions in official records. By requesting extracts from relevant police or judicial registers, we can identify criminal history that may be relevant for recruitment or security assessments. All checks are carried out in accordance with applicable laws and regulations in each country.

An employment history check verifies that a candidate’s stated employment details, such as job titles and periods of employment, are accurate. We validate this information by verifying references or HR contacts at previous employers and confirming the details provided by the candidate.

Education verification ensures that a candidate holds the education and degree level they claim. DISA verifies diplomas and certificates directly at the source and, where possible, contacts the educational institution to confirm the information, whether the institution is national or international. This helps ensure that the candidate meets the required qualifications.

Identity verification means that DISA confirms a person’s identity by matching information against reliable sources and documents, such as identity documents and official registers. The purpose is to ensure that the individual is who they claim to be, reducing the risk of errors and identity fraud in the recruitment process. Identity verification can also be combined with a work permit check to confirm the candidate’s legal right to work in the country.

A credit check is conducted by DISA together with our data providers to assess a candidate’s financial situation and identify potential financial risks, such as debts or payment defaults. This check provides insight into financial responsibility and is particularly relevant for roles involving financial responsibility or positions of trust. Common elements include payment records and other financial data to support informed hiring decisions.

An integrity declaration is a form in which the candidate self-discloses information about behaviour, roles or incidents that may be relevant to the position. The candidate completes and signs the declaration digitally, providing additional insight into matters that may not appear in external registers and complementing other checks in the screening process. Responses are stored securely and may be included in the final screening report to support recruitment and risk assessments.

How does it work?

DISA’s screening software works quickly and efficiently. Once the right screening profile has been chosen and the employee’s personal details have been filled in, DISA takes over. This includes all communication and automatic reminders. Once we receive all the data, the screening starts.

  • Step 1: Log in

    Fill in your personal username and password.

  • Step 2: Select Profile

    Select the right screening profile for this candidate.

  • Step 3: Candidate Info

    Enter the candidate's details.

  • Step 4: Candidate Screening

    Candidate receives an email with login details and a request to start their own pre-employment screening.

  • Step 5: Screening is processed

    DISA will process the screening and complete all background checks.

  • Step 6: Screening is completed

    Both you and the candidate will receive a message that the screening report is completed and ready to download.
