What is an IBAN number?

An IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is a unique code that is used worldwide to identify bank account numbers. This code consists of several parts:

  •  Country code: This indicates which country the bank account is from. For example, “NL”.
  •  Check Digit: This helps verify the integrity of the number.
  •  Bank code: The code that identifies the specific bank. For example, “INGB”.
  •  Account number: The unique number that represents your bank account.

The IBAN number is important for international payments, because it ensures fast(er) and error-free processing of payments. 

  • BIC (Bank Identifier Code): The name says it all, but the BIC code is a code that identifies banks worldwide.
  • SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication): The network that connects banks worldwide, this is often linked to a BIC code.
  • IBAN (International Bank Account Number): This is the account number and helps identify bank accounts in international payments.

The difference between the codes lies in how it is applied: the BIC and SWIFT codes are for identifying banks, while an IBAN specifically relates to account numbers. Which is unique for each person.

During the IBAN-name check, it is checked whether the length of the number is correct and whether it meets the correct structure. After this has been checked, authenticity is checked; Does the IBAN number actually exist and is it valid? It is also important to check whether it is a private account.
