What is included in a background check?

What is included in a background check depends on the position and responsibilities being screened, the sector, and or regulation. Two examples of background checks are those conducted before employment, pre-employment screening, and those carried out during employment, in-employment screening. Background check before employment

A background check before employment also known as pre-employment screening involves screening applicants before hiring them. This is something that companies should always do to ensure an honest and safe working environment.

A pre-employment screening includes, for example, verifying the information the applicant has provided about themselves in their curriculum vitae, as well as a legal and financial background check potentially. The following types of checks are usually included:

  • Address
  • Education
  • Work references
  • Credit check
  • Salary

Background check during employment


A background check during employment means checking information on someone who is already employed. This might be done, for example, if someone is applying for a new position that carries more responsibility within the company or if there is industry-specific legislation that requires a background check. Regular periodic background checks can also be carried out to increase workplace security.

This type of background check may include the same components as a pre-employment screening or may be extended to include other components which are necessary for the particular position.
