Reference check to verify work experience

During this check, the work experience of a (potential) employee is checked. This is done by contacting an appointed referee previously specified by the (potential) employee. The referee is asked to answer several questions of which the answers will be included in the screening report.

To check the most recent work experience, a (potential) employee is asked to provide the contact details of a referee, including name, current email address, and telephone number. DISA only accepts business email addresses and phone numbers. An appointed referee will never be approached via a Gmail or Hotmail address, nor via a personal (mobile) number.

If it turns out that the appointed referee is no longer employed with the specified organisation, the contact details of the Human Resources department will be requested.

An additional advantage of approaching referees via a business email address or telephone number is that this serves as source verification. DISA checks the work experience directly at the source, i.e. the most recent employer.’

To fulfill the Work experience check, a referee will receive a secure link by email to complete and submit an online questionnaire. Objective information is then confirmed using the following list of questions:

  • Is the specified employer truthfully correct?
  • Is the specified position of the (potential) employee correct?
  • Is the specified period of employment correct (accurate to the day)?

DISA only verifies factual information during a Work experience and reference check. A referee will never be asked about the performance of a (potential) employee in a certain position.

Additionally, DISA will never contact a referee by telephone to discuss the matter. On the few occasions that DISA will contact by telephone, it is simply to encourage the referee to complete and submit the online questionnaire. This only happens when DISA has not received a response after sending multiple reminders by email.

To avoid delays, DISA advises (potential) employees to inform their referee before the reference check. From that moment on, the referee is aware of the fact that he or she can expect an email containing the link to the online questionnaire, from DISA,. If the answers are submitted on time, the Work experience and reference check can be completed quickly and included in the screening report.
