PEP check

Calendar Icon 02 August, 2024

In a world where trust is fundamental, it’s important to check the background of potential employees, customers, and business partners as closely as possible. The PEP check focuses on Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs) to prevent your organisation from inadvertently becoming involved with people who have political influence or who may cause risks, such as corruption, money laundering or terrorist financing.

What is a pep check?

A PEP check is a screening process that checks whether a person is registered as a Politically Exposed Person (PEP). This is about current and former major political figures, their immediate family members, and close advisors. By performing this check, you can ensure that you limit possible risks by taking extra measures.

Different types of pep checks

PEP checks may vary based on national legislation and international standards. They typically include different levels of political exposure, with the highest levels including heads of state and government and lower levels including their family and business partners.

To whom does the pep check apply

The PEP check is very important for organisations in, for example, the financial sector and other sectors that are sensitive to financial crimes. Also, high-ranking positions regardless of the sector. The higher the position, the higher the risk of corruption, blackmail or bribery. In addition, potential employees, customers, suppliers and other stakeholders are checked to ensure that there are no hidden risks due to political connections.

Check on pep list

A PEP list is drawn up internationally, with multiple sources being consulted. For example, the CIA World Leaders List. To perform a PEP check, there must be a valid reason, such as legitimate interest. Is it a requirement by anti-money laundering regulations? These regulations are laid down in the Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Prevention Act (WWFT).

The PEP lists are divided into 5 levels. Political heavyweights such as heads of state, government and parliament leaders are number one on the list and the closest associated of a PEP level five. The PEP check helps organisations to ensure compliance and minimise reputational risks.
