What is Single Sign-On?

You’ve probably heard the term SSO, but what does it mean exactly? The SSO meaning is: Single Sign On.

Single Sign-On (SSO) is an authentication method that allows a user to easily sign in by using a single set of credentials. This allows you to automatically log in to multiple systems and applications. This eliminates the need to log in again for each separate system. In this way, you ensure an efficient and safe user experience.

How does Single Sign-On work?

SSO works on the basis of an authentication mechanism where a user logs in once. This user then gets access to multiple linked applications without having to log in again and again. This is done using an SSO token.

The moment a user logs in to a Single Sign-On matching system, the authentication server creates a token with the credentials. This token is then passed on to other linked applications that accept it as valid proof of identity. By using this technique, the user does not have to enter his login details over and over again.

Are there different types of Single Sign-On?


There are different types of SSO solutions. It depends on which technology and authentication protocol is used. At DISA we use the following variant: Microsoft Entra ID Single Sign-On, based on the OpenId protocol. This method is suitable for business environments and allows for secure and streamlined access to various systems.
