Employment Verification Guide

Understanding Employment and Income Verification

What is The Work Number?

The Work Number® from Equifax provides a secure, fast, and discreet way for authorized companies to verify your employment and income. This is useful when you’re applying for a loan, a job, or a lease. It’s available 24/7, so decisions aren’t held up waiting for verification calls to your employer.

Who Can Access Your Information?

Not just anyone! Only credentialed companies with a permissible purpose (as defined by the Fair Credit Reporting Act, FCRA) can access your employment or income information. Plus, you must give your consent, which is typically part of the paperwork you sign when applying for a loan, job, or lease.

How Can You Ensure Your Information is Accurate?

You have the right to see who has accessed your data and dispute anything that’s incorrect. You can check your Employment Data Report (EDR) to view current and past employment and income details and verify who has requested your information in the last two years.

Protecting Your Information:

The Work Number uses advanced security, including encryption and multi-factor authentication, to keep your data safe. Additionally, they comply with FCRA standards to protect your privacy.

Who Might Need to Verify Your Employment or Income?

Employment and income verifications are commonly needed when:

Applying for a loan or government assistance.

        Leasing an apartment.

        Applying for a job.

        Updating your immigration status.

        Applying for a credit card.

How to Provide Proof of Employment:

If you’re asked to provide proof of employment or income, direct them to www.theworknumber.com. Your employer has partnered with The Work Number to handle these requests 24/7. You can also provide them with DISA’s Employer Code: 10410691.

Accessing Your Employment Data Report (EDR):

Your EDR shows your employment and income history on The Work Number database and who has requested your information. You can access it for free by logging into The Work Number site or calling their service center.

Freezing Your Information:

Want to restrict access to your data? You can request a data freeze through The Work Number service, which will block verifiers from accessing your information unless you lift the freeze.

Need a Salary Key?

A Salary Key is a single-use code you can give to verifiers who need to access your income information. Though rarely required, you can easily generate one on The Work Number website if needed.

How to Log In to The Work Number:

    1.    Visit The Work Number Website.

    2.    Use DISA’s Employer Code 10410691.

    3.    If it’s your first time, select “Register Now” and follow the prompts to verify your identity.

    4.    For returning users, log in with your username and password.
